Parallel Journeys into the depths of mind
A nicely written novel of insight and psychological understanding where nothing is necessarily how it appears and everything can happen.
Paul and Fran Ashby are the two characters, protagonist of this new novel by promising author Ruth Skrine, who are examined in every corner of their minds. The reader follows a journey into their realities, from the time they first meet, through the force of external events that change them completely.
Within the scientific world of genetic modification, cloak and dagger antics are more than half expected and often employed. This usually occurs between opposing factions and competitors in the arguments about the pace of scientific advance and of human versus animal rights.
Searching for answers is a risky business and truth a valuable commodity. Fran must be cautious in her quest to uncover the carefully concealed facets of her husband’s life, which only become apparent at his death. When she starts asking too many questions, she attracts the attention of a thug from Paul’s company, Nonsec, but this might just be the beginning of her troubles.
Skrine is a retired doctor who writes, in part, from her clinical knowledge. Her wide experience in psychosexual medicine illuminates the characters. This is her second novel - the first is not yet published - but she is already working on her next books, including a saga of a medical family. Parallel Journeys is a feast of conspiracy and intrigue, interwoven with stark observations of the human condition. Skrine lends an air of authority and reality to the conflicts of mind and body.
